It’s no secret that great art comes from the margins. From those who are either pushed to create from inner forces, or who create to show they deserve to be recognized. Los Angeles-based street singer, guitarist, and roots music revolutionary Sunny War has always been an outsider, always felt the drive to define her place in the world through music and songwriting. Her restless spirit, a byproduct of growing up semi-nomadic with a single mother, led her to Venice Beach, California, where she’s been grinding the pavement for some years now, making a name for her prodigious guitar work and incisive songwriting, which touches on everything from police violence to alcoholism to love found and lost.

In this Hear At Home episode, 88.5 FM afternoon host Andy Chanley talks with Nashville-based, Phoenix-born singer-songwriter Courtney Marie Andrews. Chanley and Andrews talk about the welcoming reception of her new album ‘Old Flowers.’ She describes her 5th album as something small and intimate, “not a lot of cooks in the kitchen”.The album comes after what she describes as a very transformative year, with a lot of personal changes. Although her album was put out during a time where touring is non-existent, she has been coping by working on creative projects like painting and poetry. Andrews reminisces on some of her favorite artists that she shared the stage with last year, such as John Prine and Dolly Parton.
