In 1953, Truck driver Elvis Presley made his first ever recording when he paid $3.98 to record two songs, “My Happiness” and “That’s When Your Heartaches Begin,” as a gift for his mother. The songs surfaced 37 years later as part of an RCA compilation called Elvis—The Great Performances.

 In 1964, The Rolling Stones appeared on the US chart for the first time when their cover of Buddy Holly’s “Not Fade Away” peaked at #48.

In 1958, The Quarrymen, featuring John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, John “Duff” Lowe on piano, and Colin Hanton on drums, recorded a disc at a small studio in an electronics shop. They recorded “That’ll Be The Day” and “In Spite Of Danger” in one take each, and both songs ended up on The Beatles’ Anthology 1.
