3 songs video performance + interview from The SoCal Sound Sessions
Dominique Fils-Aimé has released a new album titled Our Roots Run Deep and joins Bilingual Sounds host Byron Gonzalez with a 3 song performance at The SoCal Sound’s main performance studio.
The Montreal based vocal jazz artist “puts the history of African-American musical culture into the heart of her work”, and Our Roots Run Deep is currently nominated for for the 2024 JUNO Vocal Jazz Album of the year, which if won, will be Dominique’s second JUNO award.
Describing the influence for the album to Byron during the interview, “My roots are humanity's roots. You know how much we're connected. I think that's something we say often. So people will take it a bit lightly, but it is quite powerful. And the parallel between the way trees and nature works and us, like when people say I'm going out in nature is like your nature to our nature and we function pretty similar… the way the trees communicates in a forest we didn’t know before, but there’s a whole underground network that is so complex, and they communicate very loudly and very far. I keep thinking perhaps these connections that we didn't see before, but were there, might apply to humans as well, and another realm that we don't see yet…”
Dominique Fils-Aimé peformed performed with a full band, in studio, and played “To Walk Away”, “Give Me A Reason” & “Our Roots Run Deep”.
