88.5 FM receives so much music on a daily basis... CDs, downloads, reissues, box sets, cassette tapes, vinyl records and more. Songs are generally chosen by committee at the station, but it's the job of the music director to go through the stacks and stacks with a fine tooth comb. This blog may include major label releases, independent artists, even random submissions for your listening pleasure.
Music Director Picks #10
SHARON VAN ETTEN - SEVENTEEN
Here's a new release off Sharon Van Etten’s album Remind Me Tomorrow. The first single we heard is called "Comeback Kid" and now we're treated with the song "Seventeen" which takes us back to when Sharon was a teenager. She'll be on the road, playing some shows with Fred Armisen and Nilüfer Yanya and she'll be in LA on Friday March 1st. The album features a more mature songwriter and musician while her past experiences in NYC provide much inspiration.
GARY CLARK JR - THIS LAND
As our Program Director Sky Daniels puts it, "The album is the document that declares his 'guitar hero' status is now certified for all time. The current 'rock is dead' false contention is silenced with a loud roar!" With powerful imagery, the symbolism in this video is worth the watch. His new album of the same title will be out Friday March 1st, a good day for record releases. Be careful... some of the lyrics in this version aren't safe for work.
NICK WATERHOUSE - SONG FOR WINNERS
One of our favorite artists, Southern California native Nick Waterhouse is at it again with his swingin' brand of neo-soul. He most recently toured the country with Allen Stone, but has headlined many many concerts on his own. Coming to us by way of local label Innovative Leisure Records (Hanni El Khatib, The Molochs, Pinky Pinky) "Song For Winners" is a track we're excited to share. Nick plays The Regent Theater DTLA on Friday April 26th... it'll be a fantastic show.
