Music Director Picks #20: WARGIRL, Devon Gilfillian, Alice Wallace

BUZZBANDS LA writes, "It’s ironic, or at least telling, that one of Southern California’s most dynamic, relevant bands would need to look across the Atlantic Ocean to find a label home for their music. But that’s what happened in December, when WARGIRL’s debut EP, “Arbolita,” was released by Sweden’s Lab 259. The release represents another powerful statement from the Long Beach-based sextet, who have been making them, albeit sporadically, since they emerged in 2016 with “People.” WARGIRL’s sound is organic and their beats danceable; it’s garage rock-meets-world music, the kind of stuff that soundtracks cultural revolutions."

 

DEVON GILFILLIAN - GET OUT AND GET IT 
Devon Gilfillian is a favorite here at 88.5 FM. Following his electrifying 2016 debut EP with upbeat singles like “High” and “Troublemaker” in 2018, Gilfillian signed to Capitol Records and hit the road––performing with the likes of Anderson East, Keith Urban, Gladys Knight, Kaleo, The Fray, Mavis Staples, and more. In early 2019, Gilfillian traveled to Africa to find healing and inspiration before headlining a tour in Scandinavia and opening for Brothers Osborne on their spring tour. His latest single "Get Out and Get It" off of his forthcoming full-length record is available now. 

 

ALICE WALLACE - THE BLUE 
Alice is a hard working musician who is well respected in the Southern California music scene. Her new record Into The Blue could be her breakout record, propelling her onto the national stage. Robert Crawford of Rolling Stone had to say, "On the title track from her fourth album, country-singing Californian Alice Wallace sings about the uncertainty of a career spent on the road. “The Blue” pays tribute to those who’re willing to take leaps, laced with soaring strings that nod to the country classics of the 1970s."
