The environment this past Thursday at The Greek Theatre was one of a kind. The illuminance of the super blue moon above the amphitheater created a naturally magical space for both headliner Sylvan Esso and opener Reyna Tropical.
Led by Fabiola Reyna (who is also the founder of She Shreds Media), Reyna Tropical was originally formed as an LA local collaboration with producer Nectali Diaz, more commonly known as “Sumohair.” Following the untimely passing of Diaz last year, Fabiola made the decision to continue releasing music under Reyna Tropical, with the emphasis that Sumohair continues to guide her and that her music is always a collaboration with her ancestors.
Joining Fabiola on stage and on tour is Antonia Estela. The two played songs from throughout the history of Reyna Tropical, even off their eponymous debut EP.
The show fell on the eve of Fabiola’s birthday, with the crowd gathering to sing to her. Before the completion of the set, Fabiola reminded the audience to allow themselves to grieve, as well as dance, cry, and even make music, stating that “It’s such a gift to feel so much.”
After a touching and high energy set from Reyna Tropical, North Carolina duo Sylvan Esso took to the stage. Having worked together for over a decade, the massive crowd at the iconic venue truly reflected the success shared between Amelia Meath and Nick Sanborn.
The two bore four studio albums - all of which defy the norms of electronic music. The duo found their way to The Greek this past Thursday while on their No Rules tour, aptly named after their latest album, ‘No Rules Sandy.’ The album, which was recorded in January of last year and released the following August, immediately became a fan favorite among Sylvan Esso’s devoted followers.
To make the space reflect their music and vibe, the duo was constantly illuminated by mood-altering strobe lights that shone on Sanborn’s setup and followed Meath around on stage.
The band shone several spotlights on songs from ‘No Rules Sandy,’ notably starting the set off with “Alarm.” Throughout the night, Sylvan Esso did not stray away from playing fan favorites, playing 5songs such as “Ferris Wheel” and “Radio.”
Sylvan Esso continues their tour throughout September, joined by both Reyna Tropical and artist GRRL.
