This happened:
In 1964, The Rolling Stones were met by over 500 fans as they arrived in NYC for their first US tour. The first gig took place four days later in San Bernardino, California.
In 1967, David Bowie released his self-titled debut album.
In 1967, The Beatles’ Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band was released in the US (according to the Beatles official website, though some sources say it came out here on June 2). Sgt. Pepper’s went on to win four Grammys, including being the first rock album to win Album Of The Year. Rolling Stone ranked it as the greatest album ever, and it’s one of the best-selling albums ever, with more than 32 million copies sold worldwide.
In 1968, Simon & Garfunkel went to #1 on the US singles chart with “Mrs. Robinson” which was featured in the Dustin Hoffman/Ann Bancroft film The Graduate.
In 2013, Modern Vampires Of The City by Vampire Weekend debuted at #1 on the US album chart. Their sophomore album, Contra, had also debuted at #1 in 2010, marking the first time an indie rock band had entered at #1 with two consecutive releases.
